Bixbite General Gemstone Details

ˈbiks-bīt
Bixbite

Stone of Acceptance of All

The family of gemstones known as Beryl are very popular not only for their strength, but also for their range in color, high brilliance and the fact that they are wonderful to wear at any and all times; Bixbite is the red variety of Beryl, the others being Aquamarine (teal), Emerald (green), Goshenite (clear), Morganite (pink) and Heliodor (yellow).

The Beryl is said to originate from Mesopotamia and was told to be worshiped as a stone of magic by the ancient cultures.

Bixbite Scientific Properties

BixbiteMohs Hardness of 7.5 with a hexagonal crystal structure

Bixbite Beryl is blessed with it’s beautiful red coloring from the traces of manganese that is present in addition to the basic Beryl ‘formula’.  This is quite a rare stone and when found is usually in very small specimens, and heavily included.

Beryl develops in pegmatites and certain metamorphic rocks. It occurs with Quartz, Microcline, and Muscovite in pegmatites, and with Quartz, Muscovite, and Almandine in schist of regional metamorphic rocks.

Bixbite was first found in the Thomas Range in Juab County Utah, USA in the year 1905. It wasn’t until later in the 1950′s that larger, higher quality crystals were discovered in the Wah Wah Mountains of Beaver County. These are the only Bixbite crystals that have been found suitable for faceting. Currently this is the only area in the world where gem quality Bixbite is mined.
