Bloodstone

Stone of Being Present

Medieval Christians are said to have believe that Bloodstone was first formed when drops of Christ’s blood fell and stained Jasper at the foot of the cross during the crucifixion.  These Christians often used to carve scenes of the crucifixion and martyrs into the bi-colored stone, which lead to the stone being named the “Martyr’s Stone”.  The ancient Greeks and Romans carried and wore Bloodstone during athletic competitions to ensure endurance and secure favor of those in power-to help ensure the athlete’s fame.  Later the Gnostics believed that Bloodstone brought the bearer untold wealth as well as prolonged life.

Bloodstone is part of the Chalcedony Quartz family, and is also known as Heliotrope, due to the fact that in ancient times the stones (once polished) were described as a reflection of the sun, perhaps reminding the ancients of the dark red sun setting on the ocean.  It is in fact a Green Jasper that is dotted with red splotches of iron oxide; it was treasured and long served as a birthstone for March in ancient times.

Traditionally Bloodstone is told to assist in casting spells as well as predicting the future by causing extreme meteorological events such as winds, storms, thunder and lighting, which appear to announce the coming events.  This spells power was said to be enhanced by placing the stone in water and setting the water in direct sunlight.

As with any magic, one does not posses the right to deliberately attempt to control another’s day, or destiny with magic. It is a universally known truth that the backlash from such an action would not truly be worth the effort.  However if the spell or cast is favorable, and one believes they are in the right in doing so-this being not just the opinion of the caster- and if one is sincerely willing to accept responsibility for any repercussion or wrong actions as well as then repairing those wrong doings, then a Bloodstone can assist powerfully in this type of magical workings.  It is especially useful in Goddess rituals, as well as for exploring past lives, specifically in dreamwork.
