Onyx Gemstone Properties

Onyx General Gemstone Details

ˈä-niks

Natural OnyxMaster of One’s Future Stone

Onyx was very popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The name is said by some to be derived from the Greek work Nux, meaning ‘fingernail’ or ‘claw’ due to the fact that most “Onyx” was a flesh tone color in those years.

The tale is that one afternoon, Cupid cut the fingernails from the divine goddess Venus, with an arrowhead while she slept, leaving clipping scattered amongst the sand and that the Fates turned them to stones. As they were no longer part of the heavenly body, they would still never perish.

Onyx Scientific Properties

Natural OnyxMohs Hardness of 7 with a trigonal crystal structure.

Although Onyx (as well as Sard and Sardonyx) are all varieties of Chalcedony, Onyx is quite similar to Agate.  With it’s straight rather than curved banding.  Sard is a reddish-brown form of Onyx, and Sardonyx is a blending of the two.

In the times of ancient Greek, most all Chalcedony in all colors was called Onyx. Today most often we think of the black coloring to refer to Onyx, although it does in fact present in browns, reds, tans, and white.

Onyx has been minded in India, Brazil, Uruguay, and the US.
