Gemstone Details
Common worldwide, the stone calcite is the principal component of limestones
and marbles as well as most stalactites and stalagmites.
It can be found as large transparent, colorless,
complex crystals or as prismatic crystals inter-grown with different
minerals. Due to it's softness it is faceted only for a collector,
generally they are made en cabochon or in bead form for the jewelry
artist.
Native Americans consider this stone to be a holy
stone of the land of their fathers that was bestowed upon them by the
Gods.

The carbonate mineral
calcite is a calcium carbonate corresponding to the formula CaCO3 and is
one of the most widely distributed minerals on the Earth's surface. It is
a common constituent of sedimentary rocks, limestone in particular. It is
also the primary mineral in metamorphic marble. It also occurs as a vein
mineral in deposits from hot springs, and also occurs in caverns as
stalactites and stalagmites. Calcite is often the primary constituent of
the shells of marine organisms (e.g. plankton, bivalves, etc.). Calcite
represents the stable form of calcium carbonate; aragonite will change to
calcite at 470°C.

Most all calcite has the unique optical quality of double
refraction. If you draw a line on a piece of paper, then place a
piece of calcite over the line, when you look through the stone, the line
will appear to be doubled.
This property is what allows calcite to be used in spell to
"double the power" of the spell. It is placed on the alter
or worn during magical rituals for this very purpose.
For general magical rites, use colors as follows:
- Black to aide in clearly seeing the truth, regardless of what it
is. It will help in making plans to cover all aspects of a given
situation.
- Blue (energy: receptive, element: water) It is a healing stone
