The name is international, from the Latin, lapis, which means stone, and from the Arabic, aula, which means blue. When lapis was first introduced to Europe, it was called ultramarinum, which means beyond the sea. 

All cultures have used lapis to decorate the statures of the deities. It has always been greatly valued by rules, being used for magical and medicinal purposes.

Lapis lazuli is a blue rock made up of several different minerals, including but not limited to: lazurite, sodalite, hauyne, calcite and pyrite.  The composition and color of the stone varies, but it is the intense dark blue with patches of white and pyrite that has always been considered the best. quality.

Lapis has been imitated by stained jasper and by paste with inclusions of copper. Imitation lapis lazuli produced by Pierre Gilson of France has a composition very similar to that of natural lapis.
