General Gemstone Details

Larimar, a gentle, kind, soft aqua blue of the Caribbean sea, found in a stone in but just one location worldwide. Discovered by Mr. Mendez, a Peace Corp worker, in 1974, he gave it the name Larimar....Lari (after his daughter Larisa) and Mar (from the Spanish name for Sea) as the colors so resembled the sea which was so close in proximity.

Larimar is quite a rare form of pectolite. Often mistaken for translucent turquoise or fine blue jade, larimar mirrors the beautiful waters that surround it's island of origin. The crystal vibration and unique blend of blue, teal, white and other colors have drawn many a people to it's door. It reflects the differing colors of the ocean, from deep to light shades of blue, and jade green, often sprinkled with white and gray colors from the clouds in the sky, and then peppered now and again with red dendrites...it is a most incredible site.

Scientific Properties:
Mohs Hardness of 7 with a monoclinic crystal structure.

Scientifically, larimar is a completely unique gemstone in it's mineral and chemical make up. Copper (similar to turquoise) is the causation of the colors, which is but the only connection to the ancient stone known as turquoise.

Larimar was first discovered in the year 1916 in Bahoruco or Barahona, south west of the Dominican Republic. It was discovered by a Spanish born priest Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren, who reported his discovery to the Archbishop Nouel in Santo Domingo, but alas, no mining action was taken at the time.

It was not until the year 1974 when the American Peace Corps volunteer Norman Rilling and the Dominica Miguel Mendez, re-discovered the stone on the beaches of Barahona, close to the alluvial of the river Bahoruco.

At this time, the stone was analyzed by several geologist, as well as the Smithsonian Institute in the USA, and they all agreed that Larimar has a volcanic origin and belongs to the group of the pectolite, with the exception of course that it is the only blue pectolite found up until this time.

Most mining for this gem is open pit, with miners using only pick, shovel and hammer to break the weathered basalt in search of this fantastic pectolite. Efforts are currently being made by the Dominican Government to modernize the mining system. The available quantity of larimar is unknown, which makes the supply uncertain in the long run.
