Scientific Properties:
Mohs Hardness of 6.5 to 7 with a hexagonal crystal structure.

Sugilite is a somewhat obscure mineral named for the Japanese geologist who discovered the first specimens in 1944, Ken-ichi Sugi.

It does not form well shaped crystals but is usually massive. This works well, as it is used mostly for ornamental and semiprecious stone purposes. It has quite a distinctive opaque purple color when found in its most desirable color shades. The polished stones are generally opaque with an almost waxy luster and a deep reddish purple color.

It has been described as a purple turquoise although there is no relation between the two minerals at all. Its jewelry uses are becoming widespread and sugilite is being used in jewelry styles with turquoise, malachite and coral. Some sugilite has been cut into gemstones, but these are very rare and not as beautiful as the cabachones.

Sugilite helps in understanding negative circumstance by showing one what is happening, and how it is out of balance. Excellent tool for mediation exercises to bring the mind and spirit back into attunement.

Sugilite assists in connecting the physical to the spiritual, it aids in understanding the spiritual reasons for the lessons we encounter, as well as bringing loving comfort from the Universe to accept the lessons for what they truly are.
