General Gemstone Details Tiger iron is composed of 2 billion year old sedimentary deposits comprise of chet or even tiger's eye, red jasper and black or silver gray hematite. The rippled wavy bands of color often resemble a scenic view in different pieces. Although it is it's own gemstone with it's own properties, it is a combination of other stones, and is ultimately a member of the quartz family when followed down the family roots. It has been unearthed in England, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and the Lake Superior Region of the United States. | ||||||||

Scientific Properties: Tiger Iron...is it quartz, hematite, jasper or something all together different? Stromatolites are laminated fossils formed by blue/green algae and sediment. The sediment sticks to the surface of the living algae, forming a type of crust. In turned, the algae grows through the sediment to form a new layer of living matter. A new film of sediment sticks to the algae and so on and so forth...the resulting structure looks like a mound, and in a cross section each layer can be seen. Stromatolites are the most abundant fossils known from the Precambrian time. They are less common in the Palezic, perhaps just as snail like predators began to graze on the algae. So, is Tiger Iron a Stromatolites? The determination is not definitive, and even the experts are not in agreement...the talk is that the folds could be of tectonic origin. Tiger iron could easily be both BIF (banded Iron Formation) and Stromatolites in the sense that the layers were preserved due to the fact that they were trapped by mats of microbes living on the sea floor. In any case, the debate is still raging, but this does not diminish the metaphysical qualities of this fine stone!
