It was used to add weight to oil wells during drilling to keep the oil down in the drill hole as opposed to having it gushing out and being wasted.
The early 20th century scientist found that barium (or Barite) was able to be used as a barrier against the more dangerous x-ray procedure as well as ultraviolet radiation and radioactivity.
One form commonly called a Barite Rose often occurs with a white, brown or reddish tinge to them, in Native American cultures this is known as a ‘desert rose’, and are believed to be gifts from spirits who have come in the night to carve the stones as gifts of remembrance.
