An exotic family of gemstones, Chrysoberyl was first discovered in 1789 by renowned geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner. The name was derived from the Greek words , ‘chryso’ meaning golden and ‘beryl’, meaning ‘green’. Chrysoberyl is classified as its own independent mineral group and species - Chrysoberyl is a minor ore of the element beryllium (Be) and occurs in granite and granite pegmatites.

Scientific Properties

~ S ~

Mohs Hardness of 8.5 with an orthorhombic crystal structure.

Another one of the gem world’s confusing stones is the Chrysoberyl….

Let’s begin with Chrysoberyl, and Beryl are, in fact, two entirely different gemstones, although they do share a similar appearance and composition beryllium.

Beryl is aluminum beryllium silicate, whereas chrysoberyl is beryllium aluminum oxide.

Next, there are three different gemstone varieties of Chrysoberyl

  1. Common Chrysoberyl which can be yellowish to light green depending on the iron content, is a transparent to a translucent form traded specifically as Chrysoberyl.
  2. Cat’s Eye Chrysoberyl or Cymophane, is the chatoyant variety of Chrysoberyl.
  3. Alexandrite is the Color Change variety of Chrysoberyl named after Russian Czar Alexander II.

In very rare cases a Color Change Chrysoberyl (Alexandrite) may also exhibit the chatoyant Cat’s Eye effect, which is then called Cat’s Eye Alexandrite.
